Leadership

Why Is It Important To Serve Others?

Most of us have experienced leaders who were all about themselves. Using the skills of others to reach their current position and then calling themselves a leader. These leaders who boast about being a leader are often a leader in title only, not a leader of people who chose to follow them willingly.

Leadership is not about the position we hold but about what we can do for the people who follow us.

Leadership is about serving others, whether your employees, your team, or your investors.

“The first step to leadership is servanthood.” – John Maxwell

When we think about servanthood, what does that mean? Does it mean waiting on others or performing duties for another person? Not in leadership. Servanthood in leadership refers to the focus and commitment we have on the needs of the people we lead. It means giving your team and employees the information and resources they need to complete their work successfully, not to do their work for them.

When leaders serve others, they gain followers through valuing, trusting, and respecting every person they come in contact with. They listen attentively; I mean really listen to what is being said. They solicit ideas, ask questions, want opinions, look for participation, and value all feedback.

When leaders educate others through their words and actions, they mentor, lead by example, and help others achieve their goals. Through these selfless actions, leaders gain trust and loyalty. Leaders bring out the feelings of self-worth in other people, inspiring them to greater heights than they would have reached on their own.

Lead because you serve those who serve you.

To be a leader, remember authority comes from the people you lead, not from yourself. Focus on benefiting others, admit mistakes, and ask how you can do better next time.
